First Steps
School at Home vs Homeschooling
Structured vs. unstructured, homeschooling vs. unschooling, teaching at home vs. homeschooling, home education vs. institutional school at home. What’s the difference? Who cares?! Everyone should because it all depends on your values, beliefs, and worldview. Further, do you want to be stressed out, or on an adventure with your children? Dr. Brian Ray will give you insight, theory, practice, and research statistics from his 37 years of studying homeschooling and his wife’s and his parent-led home-based education of eight children. Do you want to be stressed out trying to reproduce someone else’s — be it an “expert educator” or your friend the homeschooler — vision of school at home, or delight in and be blessed by all of the advantages, opportunities, and beauties that are systemically a part of homeschooling of which institutional school teacher can only dream? Dr. Ray will encourage, equip, and inspire you toward the latter.

Coffe-Break for Dads : The Essential Business of Fathers in Homeschooling
The fathers’ role in home-school (and at home) is likely bigger and more important than we think. Our inherit God-given capabilities can really build up a child/teenager and equip them to tackle life’s trails in the future. But it starts with listening to a reading exercise, running some math problems, and quite frankly just being present. I will share with you my home-schooling experience, talk about some inner struggles, and in the end hope to encourage you at any stage in your journey.

In this talk, Megen will comment on the importance of keeping abreast of developments in the law of homeschooling (whether you’re a veteran or new homeschooler), and the importance of seeking out quality information on important issues relating to homeschooling. She’ll also briefly review the most common situations HSLDA’s legal team handles in their work with the homeschooling community across Canada, with the goal of helping you to proactively plan how you might manage various challenges to your homeschooling should they arise.
